Foods I Liked That Are No Longer Available
I’ve been meaning for a long time to compile a list of things I liked and if possible would continue to enjoy, but that are, for whatever reason, no longer available. In this post I will finally create such a list.
Hershey’s Kissables
In 2006 or 2007, I was introduced to the deliciousness of Hershey’s Kissables. They consisted of bite-sized milk chocolate coated in a brightly colored candy shell. I’ve heard them compared to M&M candies, but that comparison never entered my mind. To me, they were a candy all their own, bearing the classic Hershey’s Kiss shape with the added bonus of most of the rainbow’s colors.
According to an article by Fast Company, they were discontinued due to loss of popularity after a change in formulation. I don’t recall whether or not I tasted the change myself, but I would very much like to experience the original formulation again. Happily, Hersheyettes, which I recently enjoyed as a Christmas stocking stuffer (and which I actually just learned were introduced in 1954), are a suitable alternative. Those definitely are comparable to M&Ms, since they have a circular cross-section, but they are no less delicious than the Kissables I remember.
Choxie Chocolate (by Target)
Circa 2003-2005, I noticed some special red, green, white, brown (or some combination of those colors), frequently spotted boxes of chocolates at my local Target store. I didn’t realize it at the time but I found out later after some research that this was actually an effort by Target to sell its own brand of chocolate. There were several flavor options but my favorite were the mint chocolate balls, because at the time they were the best I had ever tasted. According to a Facebook post I found through this Target Addict blog post, the Choxie line has been discontinued since 2012 or earlier. I hadn’t seen it at any Target stores since 2008, so I figured it was discontinued, but I hoped I would be able to find it somewhere. At least I’m not alone in my love of the brand for its delicious chocolate and attention-grabbing packaging. Perhaps our persistence will bring it back like Burger King chicken fries fans (including myself) prompted Burger King to bring those back.
Pizza Hut Pretzel Crust
For as long as I can remember, Pizza Hut has been one of my favorite pizza places. My family has held many birthday dinners and everyday go-out-to-eat dinners at the local dine-in parlors. In recent years they offered a pretzel crust, which I tried and loved. However, the last time I requested it I was disappointed to hear that they are no longer offering it. Since then I have tried one other pizza place’s pretzel crust, but it comes standard with cheese sauce, which is unacceptable to me. When it was remade with the normal red sauce it was not good enough for me to want to get it again. Hopefully Pizza Hut is not done offering their delicious pretzel crust forever, because that was a major selling point for me.
“Cardboard” Fudge Brownies (Grocery Outlet)
Between the years circa 2003-2007, I enjoyed what my grandpa, sister and I called “cardboard brownies,” available only at Grocery Outlet. Probably by this name they don’t sound particularly appetizing, but they were the most delicious fudge brownies I have ever tasted. They were offered in inexpensive cardboard, shipping-plastic-sealed boxes and had ridged chocolate frosting that looked very much like it had been shaped by cardboard (hence the name). I don’t know when they stopped offering those brownies but I know I have visited at least two local stores several times to look for them specifically with no success. The closest thing they have now is a package of preserved round, bite-sized chocolate cakes they dub by the same name “fudge brownies.” I have tried them and they’re not bad, but the fresh “cardboard brownies” I remember are far superior.
I know there are many more foods I liked which I can no longer obtain by any normal means, so I will update this post as I think of them. In the meantime, feel free to share in the comments about foods you wish you could still get.
